Hudson Valley Gamer Con Awarded $157,324 through 2019 Regional Economic Development Council

Money will help fund and grow the largest esports gathering in the Capital Region

Albany, N.Y. – HV Gamer Con 2020 which includes partners Albany Capital Center (ACC), Center for Economic Growth (CEG) and the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) are pleased to announce they have been awarded once again a grant for what will continue to be the largest northeast collegiate esports event in the Capital Region – Hudson Valley Gamer Con 2020.

The $157,324 award will be used to organize and promote HV Gamer Con, which will be held April 4 and 5, 2020 at the ACC. It will bring together the best collegiate esport athletes from around the country as well as gaming enthusiasts.

For HV Gamer Con 2020 the best college esports competitors will battle in Overwatch, Rocket League, and Super Smash Brothers. In addition, through a partnership with Gaming Insomniacs, an amateur and high school tournament is also being planned. “We had an incredibly successful event in March of 2019 for the inaugural HV Gamer Con and it showed there is a demand for this kind of event,” said Doug McClaine, general manager of the Albany Capital Center. “We will build on those successes in 2020 by having more options and events for attendees.”

“We are thrilled to be bringing ECAC Esports competition back to Albany and the HV Gamer Con, which this award makes possible.  That region is so supportive of this event, and we couldn’t be happier to be continuing this partnership.  With the growth of ECAC Esports, this year we’ll have 60 schools and over 300 teams, there will be no shortage of action throughout the weekend,” said Dan Coonan, president and CEO of the Eastern College Athletic Conference.  “Thanks to Center for Economic Growth and the State of New York for making this vision a reality.”

“This funding for HV Gamer Con will further cement the region’s reputation as an esports and digital gaming destination. The first HV Gamer Con was a big success, and with this funding, the second will be bigger and better,” said Center for Economic Growth President and CEO Andrew Kennedy.

“Gaming Insomniacs is excited to join the ECAC and CEG this year by creating new opportunities for those in the community to get involved in the excitement of esports,” said Jide Osipitan, founder of Gaming Insomniacs.

The announcement was part of the Regional Economic Development Council Initiative in which Governor Andrew Cuomo established 10 Regional Councils to develop long-term strategic plans for economic growth in their regions.
